If you’re thinking about moving to Chico, California, you’ve probably heard about Bidwell Park, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., and our small-town charm. But beyond the well-known highlights, Chico is full of hidden gems that locals adore. These are the spots that make this community such a special place to call home.
As a local Chico Realtor, I spend my days exploring neighborhoods, coffee shops, and trails while helping clients find their perfect home. Here are some of my favorite under-the-radar places that will make you fall in love with Chico too. Here's a list of my favorite things to do in Chico, CA:

1. Secret Trails in Upper Bidwell Park
Everyone knows Bidwell Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the country. But few newcomers discover the trails tucked beyond Five Mile. Try Middle Trail for a quiet sunrise hike or Salmon Hole for a peaceful swim on a summer afternoon.
Local tip: Visit early in the morning to catch the golden light and avoid the crowds.
2. The Cozy Corners of Stoble and Daycamp Coffee Roasters
Downtown Chico has no shortage of coffee spots, but Stoble Coffee (with its rooftop patio and coworking space) and Daycamp Coffee (known for their perfect pour-overs) are local favorites. These are great places to meet neighbors, get some work done, or just enjoy Chico’s friendly community vibe.
3. Chico Certified Farmers Market: A Saturday Morning Ritual
If you want to experience Chico like a local, spend a Saturday morning at the Farmers Market on Wall Street. You’ll find fresh local produce, live music, and plenty of friendly faces. Bonus tip: you can bike there and use the free bike valet, one of Chico’s coolest sustainability perks.
4. Local Wine and Beer Spots Worth Finding
Chico’s craft scene goes far beyond Sierra Nevada. Visit New Clairvaux Vineyard (90+ point wines!) in nearby Vina for a peaceful wine tasting at a historic monastery, or stop by The Commons. for locally brewed beer and live music. Looking for something non-alcoholic? Check out All the Bitters for yummy zero-proof cocktails.
5. Neighborhood Dining Favorites
Skip the chains and check out these locally loved restaurants:
Red Tavern – a cozy spot for date nights with a seasonal menu.
The Banshee – a lively downtown hangout with great food and energy.
Grana – known for wood-fired pizza, farmer's market ingredients, and an upscale-casual vibe.
6. Local Events You’ll Only Find in Chico
Once you live here, you’ll quickly discover Chico loves its community events. From the Wildflower Ride & Festival and Thursday Night Market to Artoberfest and Christmas Preview (one of my favorites!), there’s always something happening. These gatherings aren’t just fun; they make Chico feel like home.
Why Locals Fall in Love with Chico
What makes Chico truly special isn’t just its parks or restaurants. It’s the people, the sense of community, and the easygoing pace of life. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee downtown, biking through Bidwell, or cheering at a Chico State game, you’ll feel that blend of small-town warmth and California charm. Looking around at the Downtown Chico Parade of Lights last weekend, it made me so happy to be in a community that shows up for each other, and comes together to celebrate all kinds of occasions.
